This is a very important book of the period intended as a guide in the choosing, forming, or improving an estate from a quarter of an acre to a hundred acres in extent. It has reference to both design and execution. This is the second edition (first was 1850) of 1858 greatly enlarged and illustrated with numerous plans, sections and sketches of gardens and garden objects. The plates include many on layouts of flower beds. In the preface the author explains that this is a far more extensive book well illustrated and at a far higher price than the first due to the greatly expanded size. The list of illustrations covers four pages. The work covers every aspect of laying out a garden of the period and is a must for anyone interested in this period. I have selected two internal views to photograph showing a layout and 2 sketches for bridges. Book condition very good to excellent. Book internally generally clean and bright with crisp corners to page edges - some light foxing. All edges gilt. Generally excellent binding with stamped green cloth boards and spine with gold lettering and decoration. No bumping to corners. Generally very good cloth spine. The book has been rebound using the original board and the original spine has been laid down so this is a sound tight binding. See photograph. 403pp. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs. We have split our books into 70 + categories.
