Description / Information:
Book & dust wrapper as new in publishers cardboard slipcase. The 1976 Hugh Broadbent (Oldham) facsimile of the 1831 Ackermann edition. When the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened in 1830 it attracted great public interest and there was much demand for prints, books, commemorative medals and other souvenirs. Rudolf Ackermann, the foremost fine-art and colour-plate book publisher,(Microcosm of London, Public Schools etc) commissioned the promising young architect and designer Thomas Talbot Bury (1811-77 a notable architectural designer who worked with Pugin in designing details for the Houses of Parliament.) to draw a series of views of the outstanding features of the Railway. The resulting magnificent thirteen full page hand-coloured aquatint engravings were published in 1831 together with a short descriptive text serving as a guide to travellers on the railway. This reprint includes the world famous three large foldout plates which were issued as optional supplements to the original publication along with a new historical introduction to the railway by George Ottley. The plates, all doing full justice to Ackermann's originals, are (1) The Tunnel, (2) Entrance Of The Railway at Edge-Hill Liverpool, (3) Excavation of Olive Mount - 4 Miles from Liverpool, (4) Viaduct Across the Sankey Valley, (5) View of the Railway across Chat Moss, (6) Entrance into Manchester across Water Street, (7) Coaches, etc. employed on the Railway, (8) Railway Office, Liverpool, (9) Warehouses, etc. at the end of the Tunnel towards Wapping, (10) Moorish Arches, looking from the Tunnel, (11) Near Liverpool, looking towards Manchester, (12) Rainhill Bridge, (13) Taking in Water, at Parkside. The three foldout supplementary plates are: (A) View of the Intersection Bridge on the line of the St.Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway, crossing the Liverpool and Manchester Railway near the foot of the Sutton Inclined Plane, (B) & (C) - the most famous - both titled Travelling on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway - show wagons, coaches and engines in train formation.
