This is one of the best books on trains of the period. The book is one and a half inches thick. This was normally issued in attractive card covers. The front shows the steam train coming forward and the electric retreating whereas the rear cover is reversed with the Electric train approaching. This copy is bound in contemporary brown cloth with the title in gold on the spine. The gold is bright and the cloth is mottled. Binding is sound. Printed on art paper throughput, the book has 120 number pages of splendid adverts. These are normally missing in hardback bound copies. The text is both profusely and very well illustrated throughout. The first section is 348 pages followed by Fifty years of railway Engineering of an additional 180 pages making around 588 pages in all. The bound in brown decorated card wrapper is excellent clean condition a. The contents are generally virtually as new. Overall a really splendid item covering the 50 years 1864 to 1914. A must for any serious Railway related library.
