Description / Information:
Volume 18 - the volume covers the period January 1851 to June 1851. The story of the Great Exhibition of 1851 the great social and engineering triumph of the 19th century. The Illustrated London News played an important part in Paxton obtaining the architect's job by swaying public opinion, particularly with regard to the retention of 5 mature trees! Also, the magazines circulation doubled as a result of this story to 300,000 copies. The illustration shows the "domed" roof covering one of the mature trees. It was as a result of Paxton agreeing to put this raised roof in at his expense so that the trees could be retained - something public opinion insisted on- that finally enabled him to win the contract. This is miraculous when one remembers that the other tender was from the designs of the adjudicating committee!! The book is in good condition overall. Very few contemporary bindings survive in tight condition due to their heavy weight. To rebind normally costs a minimum of £50 per volume and is rarely undertaken - leather spines cost more. The price for this volume includes the cost of the rebinding. Volume 18 - Jan to June 1851 has original embossed boards with a very fine gold illustration of the Crystal Palace on the front cover. This volume has a new morocco light brown spine with 5 raised bands with gold decoration and date and name. The inside of this book is generally in good condition subject to some marks and creases. Included with this edition is a very splendid large fold out floor plan and illustration of the Great Exhibition building. The plates appear complete and small tears and creases to the foldout plates in particular have been very carefully repaired. Included lose with this volume are two important Grand Panoramas illustrating the Great Exhibition exhibits. These are numbered 5 & 6 and were published in Jan 1852. There are some creases and small tears around some of the edges. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs. To help our customers, we have split our books into 70 + categories.
