Description / Information:
This famous publication by Frederick Williams ran through many editions. This is the first edition of 1852 and contains numerous brilliant wood illustrations such as the drawbridge over the Arun, the floating railway across the Forth, the Britannia tubular bridge, Venice railway going across the causeway and many more besides. The frontispiece showing Shakespeare cliff and the title page with the viaducts are unusually clean and bright. The text is foxed and whilst the majority of illustrations are clean, there is some foxing on some pages. The book has been bound in three quarter leather with marvellous marbled boards by one of the greatest bookbinders - Bernard Middleton. The spine is calf with 5 raised bands + morocco title label and gold embellishments. The price largely reflects the binding.
