THIS SET IS SOLD. Number 230 of a spectacular limited edition of 375 copies. Printed at the Shakespeare head press Aldates Oxford, and published for the press by Basel Blackwell in 1932. The complete works of Spencer in 8 volumes. Printed on hand made uncut paper. Decorations designed and engraved on wood by Hilda Quick, and hand coloured. The initial letter of each section is beautifully coloured. Each volume has beautiful green leather spines, all in immaculate order with bright gold lettering at the head and the foot. The boards have green and cream pattered papers and the corners have vellum tipped inlays. The title pages are printed in red and black. Volume 1 contains the Shepherds Calendar in 12 parts and the Complaints in 9 parts. The introduction to the Calendar contains a beautiful hand coloured shield. Each month has Hilda quick hand coloured wood engravings. Complaints has a phoenix rising out of the flames printed in red and black. There are Hilda quick hand coloured wood engravings within the text. The other 7 volumes are similar. The condition is spectacular even the uncut edges to the pages are clean! The photo shows the frontispiece opposite the title page in volume VIII. We have photos of other plates and the covers. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs.
