Description / Information:
Volume 20 - (Jan - June 1852). Volume 18 also available (book no. 005043.) The story of the Great Exhibition of 1851 the great social and engineering triumph of the 19th century. The Illustrated London News played an important part in Paxton obtaining the architect's job by swaying public opinion, particularly with regard to the retention of 5 mature trees! Also, the magazines circulation doubled as a result of this story to 300,000 copies. The illustration shows the "domed" roof covering one of the mature trees. It was as a result of Paxton agreeing to put this raised roof in at his expense so that the trees could be retained - something public opinion insisted on- that finally enabled him to win the contract. This is miraculous when one remembers that the other tender was from the designs of the adjudicating committee!! The book is in good condition overall. Original embossed boards with a very fine gold illustration of what appears to be smugglers on the front board. Original spine - dull but with original gold tooling. Some stains on boards. The inside of this book is generally in good condition subject to some marks and creases. Considering that this is a newspaper that is more than 150 years oldit is in remarkable condition. The plates appear complete and small tears and creases to the foldout plates in particular have been very carefully repaired. Grand panoramas 13 - 29 included within this volume. All are folding plates as described above. Also includes a fold out plate entitled "The last promenade at the Crystal Palace" which includes one of the trees that was kept. The photo is of an illustration of Sleighing in New York and can be found on page 285. Buying more than one book will save on postage costs.
